H.R. 2646, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act

As a cosponsor of H.R. 2646, I was pleased to support its passage by the House of Representatives, by a vote of 422 to 2, on July 6, 2016.

Introduced in the 114th Congress by Representative Tim Murphy (PA), H.R. 2646 seeks to make available psychiatric, psychological, and supportive services for individuals diagnosed with mental illness and families in mental health crisis. Specifically, this legislation would establish the position of Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, at the Department of Health and Humans Services, to improve coordination of mental health programs, strengthen support for assisted outpatient treatment programs, and authorize grant programs intended to expand access to treatment for mental illness.

Additionally, many of the important provisions of H.R. 2646 were included in H.R. 34, the 21st Century Cures Act, which the House passed, with my support, and signed into law by President Obama on December 13, 2016.
